Opportunity to raise urgent issues

The election of Kazakhstan on June 28, 2016 in the non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for the period 2017-2018 is a great historic event.

Kazakhstan became the first among the countries of Central Asia to be a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and the fourth post-Soviet state elected non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The status of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council gives the country not only the right to preside in the Security Council, but also formulate discussions agenda. This will raise the topics relevant for the country and the region. Including water and energy balance - this is one of the topical problems of the Central Asian region, which stands on the general interstate agenda.

One of the important work areas in the Security Council, we hope, will be the reduction of tensions in Central Asia due to a shortage of water resources. The reasons for the emergence and aggravation of the water and energy problem in this region lie in the fact that with the collapse of the Soviet Union the established scheme for energy exchange disappeared, the entire system of organizing economic activity on the territory of the former USSR was eliminated. Kazakhstan initiated the launch of a regional confederation in the field of water resources and energy, which should help to resolve these issues among all countries of the region. We are glad that the UN has already supported this proposal.
